Training
Safety awareness is a necessity to ensure safety in the workplace. The UH West Oʻahu EHSO.
- EHSO safety trainings are intended to be general awareness trainings.
- Principal Investigators or designee (e.g. Lab Supervisor or Manager) must provide all new lab personnel/students with task and site specific training.
- New lab personnel/students must complete the Lab Personnel Safety Checklist with their supervisor/PI prior to working in the lab.
- Lab personnel/students are responsible for keeping all training records and completing trainings when due. The Safety Training Log may be used to keep track of training dates.

Laboratory General Training
Required for anyone working in a UHWO lab.
For all those who will submit chemical waste for disposal.

- Required annually for those who are required to use a respirator (disposable and nondisposable).
- Required annually for those who voluntarily choose to use any non-disposable respirator.
- Medical clearance (required use and voluntary use of non-disposable respirators only).
- Fit testing to the specific respirator that will be used (required use and voluntary use of nondisposable respirators only).
- Fit testing is required at least annually and whenever the respirator type changes, when the risk to the employee changes, and when the employee’s physical changes could affect the seal/fit of the respirator.
Other available trainings
Fire prevention and safety training is designed to help teach what are the causes of a fire, preventative measures that will help eliminate or minimize fire hazards in the workplace and how to properly use a fire extinguisher.
Cart safety awareness training provides an introduction to safe operations of utility carts to prevent injury to operators and others.
Hazard Communication training is required for anyone handling chemicals on the UHWO campus. In this training, topics discussed includes the use of labels, safety data sheets, proper PPE and handling chemicals appropriately.
Heat stress training is essential for those who work in hot work environments. In this training, topics discussed includes the types of heat-related illnesses, the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, risk factors, what to do if someone looks ill, and preventative measures.
Ladder safety training is required for all personnel who will need to use a stepladder, extension ladders, articulated ladders or mobile ladders. This training discusses proper selection, care and safe use of all ladders. Please contact UHWO EHSO for access to the ladder safety training.
