UH System events for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to connect and unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues while raising awareness for those issues (National Coalition on Domestic Violence). The University of Hawaiʻi System’s PAU (Prevention, Awareness, Understanding) Violence Program exists to inspire, educate, and empower students and campus communities to build safe living-learning environments, end interpersonal violence, and encourage holistic well-being in ways that are supportive, collaborative, student-centered, and strengths-based. Every campus has a PAU Violence program so reach out to your campus chairs with questions.

Below is a listing of DVAM events and workshops:

Hawaiʻi has experienced multiple disasters over the preceding few years.  Whether it was a global pandemic or the fires in Lahaina, our community has dealt with the increased stress and strain these disasters caused.  Unfortunately, we know that these stressors do not impact everyone equally.  Research has documented that there is an increase in both the prevalence and severity of domestic violence, specifically targeted at women, after these events.  Please join us for a discussion on how disasters, both natural and manmade, impact our ʻohana dealing with domestic violence so that we can better help our community heal.

Safe Zone Training
Wednesday, October 11
Lama Library

In addition to Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October is also the month we celebrate PRIDE in Hawaiʻi. Experts believe that domestic violence occurs in the LGBQT+ community with at least the same amount of frequency and severity as in the straight community. Society’s long history of marginalizing these communities can act as a barrier to LGBQT+ victims of domestic violence from seeking help from the police, legal and court systems for fear of discrimination or bias. The Safe Zone Program’s objective is for trained participants to utilize their gained knowledge and skills to foster a safe and inclusive community for LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff to promote social justice in the University of Hawaiʻi System. The program establishes a network of support and visibility for LGBTQ+ equity by providing advocates with posters and materials to share as resources on their campus. This event is by invitation to students and employees.

It is also a story about the many different forms love can take and its incredible healing power. This event is open to students, faculty & staff. Watch the movie trailer.
