Celebrate International Workers’ Day
A message from the Center for Labor Education and Research at UH West Oʻahu in an email dated April 20:
While we call this a celebration, it is truly in memoriam and with reflection to strengthen our shared commitment to protecting and uplifting each other as working people.
Each year, on April 28, Workers’ Memorial Day, we pause to remember workers who went to work and never came home. (View the AFL-CIO Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect report). A few days later, on May Day, May 1, International Workers’ Day, we celebrate the strength, solidarity, and shared struggles of working people everywhere. Together, these two days remind us that when communities come together to remember, organize, and care for one another, we help build a future rooted in dignity, safety, and justice for all workers.
We invite you to join us at any and all of the following events:
- Monday, April 27, 6 p.m., International Workers’ Day Teach-in (on campus)
- Friday, May 1, 8 a.m., Workers Forum (Wesley United Methodist Church)
- Friday, May 1, noon, Meet the Artist, Ian Ruskin (on campus)
- Friday, May 1, 5 p.m., Live Performance by Ian Ruskin of “From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Dock” (IBEW Local 1186 in Kalihi)
- Saturday, May 2, 5 p.m. Zine Launch Party (ʻAwa Hou! Kava Lounge)
These are organized in solidarity with the Defend & Respect Hawaiʻi Workers Coalition and with support from:
