Mental Health Moment: September is Suicide Awareness Month

A message from UH West Oʻahu Mental Health Services to students in an email dated Sept. 18:

September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students in the U.S. Please partner with mental health services and get help if you notice the following suicide risk factors in yourself or others:

  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Depressed mood
  • Misuse of drugs and alcohol
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Excessive feelings of guilt or shame
  • A “gut feeling” that something is not right

If you, a classmate, friend, or loved one is having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 for immediate assistance. Being aware of suicide’s threat to life and encouraging people to get help saves lives.

Mental health services are available for all UH West Oʻahu students. There is no charge and we do not bill insurance. Treatment begins with an intake that helps us formulate a wellness plan tailored to your specific needs. Don’t wait, email uhwotalk@hawaii.edu today.
