Cybersecurity Awareness Month — Phishing

It’s October and Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

Phishing is when fraudulent users send emails posing to gain your account information. In the email, they’ll disguise themselves as a trusted person to get you to click on a link or download a file. Some even ask you to buy gift cards for them.

Be vigilant! You should always be cautious about any email with an attached email or link to verify your account. If that email was unprompted, there is a good chance it is probably a phishing email.

Phishing emails can come from “anybody”. They can create fake email addresses that mimic real email addresses or use compromised accounts that fell for the scam. Check and confirm the “From” address.

Stay informed of current phishing scams happening at UH by going to https://www.hawaii.edu/its/alerts/. Forward any phishing emails to phishing@hawaii.edu.

If you have any questions about an email or clicked on a suspicious link, please contact the UH West Oʻahu IT Help Desk at 808-689-2411.
