Faculty Learning Community on Designing for Student Success, May 31-June 3
Aloha,
The UH System Office of the Vice President for Academic Strategy invites faculty to apply for a professional development opportunity on Designing for Student Success, May 31–June 3, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. each day.
Up to 10–15 participating faculty will receive small stipends, continental breakfast, and lunch. Travel and accommodation for faculty from islands other than Oʻahu will be provided. This opportunity is made possible through a grant from the Association of Public & Land-Grant Universities (APLU).
To be considered, please fill out the application form here: https://forms.gle/
Who should participate? The Designing for Student Success (DSS) faculty learning community (FLC) is intended for faculty who design and or teach courses critical for student success including those with high impact on retention:
- lower division
- prerequisites for majors
- those that serve as critical junctures in undergraduate degree completion
However, all faculty who care about student success will benefit from this learning community experience.
What is the Purpose/Goals of the DSS FLC? Participants will explore how intentional choices at the course design stage can be used to support students who may otherwise drop a course or leave the university without achieving their educational objectives. They will also explore strategies to help students develop a sense of belonging, which can contribute to both student success and student retention. After participating in this learning community, faculty will be able to do the following:
- Identify equity gaps for students and what may contribute to these disparities in performance.
- Select course design strategies for reducing equity gaps (e.g., transparent assignments, course structure, flexible course policies, course syllabus).
- Develop and implement effective communication practices (e.g., wise feedback, effective student outreach, psychologically attuned language use).
The learning community will be facilitated by faculty developers from Boise State University with the support of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support. During each meeting, participants will engage in discussion and scaffolded activities with built-in time to work on applying ideas to their own courses.
Please consider applying for this opportunity. Deadline for the application is May 20, 2022.
