Add SF designations to your fall 2024 courses by Feb. 8

A message from the UH West Oʻahu Faculty Senate’s Sustainability Committee to faculty in an email dated Feb. 3:

The Sustainability Committee would like to encourage you to apply and add Sustainability Focused (SF) designations to your courses, effective fall 2024.

The requirement has been reduced to 33% SF content. And there are no renewal requirements! Once your course is SF approved, you never have to renew it.

Sustainability Focus Designation Hallmarks:

  • SF Hallmark 1: Social and/or ecological sustainability issues will be presented and studied in a systematic manner and are fully integrated into the course Student Learning Outcomes and content. (Highlight in syllabus)
  • SF Hallmark 2: The disciplinary approach(es) and curriculum used in the course will include content knowledge and skills needed to develop one or more key “sustainability competencies.”
  • SF Hallmark 3: Students will achieve basic competency in analyzing and deliberating upon contemporary sustainability issues (see SF-designation help text) in the biophysical sciences, social sciences, humanities, and/or applied disciplines. (Highlight in syllabus)
  • SF Hallmark 4: How many required assignments are sustainability focused during the semester? Please describe and highlight in the syllabus.
  • SF Hallmark 5: What percentage of the course sustainability account for? Please describe and highlight in the syllabus.

For our students, we hope to diversify and increase the available SF courses that count towards the sustainability certificate. Given the critical times we live in, please consider adding an SF designation to any relevant courses.

For assistance in submitting your application, review the Loom SF designation tutorial created by Monique Mironesco.

Apply via Kuali and please reach out with any questions or if you need assistance.

Aloha,
UH West Oʻahu Faculty Senate’s Sustainability Committee
