An annual celebration, Mandela Day is celebrated each year on July 18, the birthday of Nelson Mandela. Born in Mvezo, South Africa in 1918, Nelson Mandela became a lawyer and an antiapartheid activist. He was an essential figure in ending apartheid and fostering racial reconciliation in South Africa. Mandela later served as South Africa’s first black president from 1994-1999. He has received hundreds of awards for his social activism, including the Nobel Peace Prize.
