Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, is a global event that raises awareness about the dire need for environmental protection. The first Earth Day was in 1970 when United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat from Wisconsin,  created the event to raise awareness about the dangers of pollution and to call on the federal government to protect our nation’s (and our planet’s) natural resources.
