Get an up-close look at an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. Listen to a presentation by NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, who recently returned from the International Space Station. Walk through a 45-foot inflatable whale, a NOAA exhibit that allows visitors to explore whale anatomy.

Check out all these activities and much more at the 10th annual Onizuka Day of Exploration (ODE), a family-friendly STEM celebration from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu. This is the fourth consecutive year ODE is being held at UH West O‘ahu.

“UH West O‘ahu plays an important role as the host site for ODE — providing a dynamic setting for hands-on learning, discovery, and community engagement,” said ODE Co-Chair Will Hartzell. “The event aligns closely with UH West O‘ahu’s mission to expand access to education and inspire students to explore future pathways.”

Hosted by Scouting America, Aloha Council, ODE features more than 100 interactive activities, demonstrations, and exhibits for learners of all ages — from kindergarten through high school and beyond.

The event, which draws thousands of attendees each year, honors the legacy of Hawai‘i-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka. This year’s event will include a special tribute to Onizuka in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger tragedy on Jan. 28, 1986.

Hartzell said ODE will feature a wide range of engaging experiences, including the Big Tire Boot Camp, a VEX IQ Robotics Scrimmage, the Bishop Museum Planetarium, Civil Air Patrol flight simulators, and the Big Kahuna Chess Tournament.

Hartzell added, “As part of this year’s event, I will be hosting the Cyber Learning Pavilion, focused on helping students, families, and educators understand how to learn about and effectively use artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools in practical, accessible ways.”

Other scheduled highlights include:

  • 7-7:30 a.m. helicopter landing on the Great Lawn
  • 8:20 a.m. parade of flags
  • 8:30 a.m. opening ceremony
  • 9 a.m. STEM booths open
  • 10 a.m. astronaut presentation at the Academy for Creative Media building

Among the featured all-day activities:

  • Robotics competition in C-208
  • NOAA 45-foot inflatable whale and planetarium exhibits at the James & Abigail Campbell Library
  • Chess tournament in the C Buildilng upper stairwell
  • Mando Mercs Costume Club characters roaming throughout the campus

Hartzell said he strongly encourages members of the UH West O‘ahu community to attend.

“ODE offers a unique opportunity to experience hands-on learning, explore educational and career interests, and connect with organizations that are shaping the future across many fields,” Hartzell said. “It’s an inspiring day that reflects the spirit of innovation, curiosity, and community that UH West O‘ahu represents.”

ODE admission and parking are free, and the event is open to the public. For complete event information, including schedules, activities, and updates, please visit www.onizukaday.com.

This event is one of the “50 Acts of Pueo Pride” — events highlighted as part of the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu’s 50th anniversary in 2026.
