The University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu campus community can connect, learn, and show support for an important cause at the Breast and Testicular Cancer Awareness Event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at the Outdoor Learning Space.
“The purpose of the Breast and Testicular Cancer Awareness Event is to educate and engage our campus community in conversations about prevention, early detection, and support for individuals affected by these cancers,” said Kelly Akana, student lead with Health and Campus Recreation at UH West O‘ahu. “We aim to raise awareness in a fun, interactive way that encourages everyone to take charge of their health through knowledge, screenings, and self checks.”
Akana said to get students involved, event organizers will have several interactive and themed games designed to make learning fun, while reinforcing their message. Among the games:
- “Kill the cancer” — Participants will toss bean bags into a cornhole board to symbolize targeting and eliminating cancer cells through awareness and early detection.
- “Bowling for boobs” — Players will bowl to knock down pins representing cancer risk factors or myths, showing how education and healthy habits can help lower risk.
There will also be a variety of refreshments and snacks, as well as informational booths and educational resources throughout the event. Students will be able to talk to the school nurse and feel breast and testicular silicone models to learn how to do self exams. Additionally, attendees who wear pink or purple to the event can win a prize; must be a UH West O‘ahu student, while supplies last.
“This event makes an important topic approachable and memorable,” Akana said. “By combining fun games with meaningful education, participants can learn how to take proactive steps toward their health, support family and friends, and help reduce the stigma around discussing cancers that affect both men and women.”
