Learn how to make pasteles — a Puerto Rican holiday staple!
The University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu Student Organic Garden presents ‘Āina-to-‘Ōpū Workshop: Puerto Rican Pasteles, an event from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at the Nāulu Center kitchen.
The hands-on workshop will cover how to make this beloved and traditional dish. Organizers describe pasteles as similar to tamales, except the masa (dough) is made of crops like green banana, cassava, plantain, or pumpkin rather than corn. They are also wrapped and steamed in banana leaves instead of corn husks.
‘Āina-to-‘Ōpū Workshop: Puerto Rican Pasteles is open to current students, faculty, and staff at UH West O‘ahu. To RSVP or for more information, email tasiay@hawaii.edu.
