University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu students can apply for research experiences with Hawai‘i IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), a federally funded grant program that originates from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health, as well as with Pūko‘a Kani ‘Āina, a National Science Foundation (NSF) Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP) grant designed to increase Native Hawaiian student success in STEM at UH West O‘ahu.

The deadline to apply for these spring 2024 student research experiences is Friday, Jan. 26.

The Hawai‘i INBRE and the Pūko‘a Kani ‘Āina research opportunities “provide students with training and experience designing their own research projects,” said Dr. Megan Ross, Pūkoʻa Kani ʻĀina co-principal investigator. “This type of experience can help them to prepare for their career.”

Students who join the Hawai‘i INBRE Student Research Experience (SRE) Program will receive help preparing for and guidance through career choices, learn valuable and hands-on lab and research experience, have an opportunity to present at a scientific conference and the potential to publish their research, and develop and grow themselves personally and professionally. Interested students can apply here or email inbre@hawaii.edu for general questions.

Additionally, Pūko‘a Kani ‘Āina is accepting applications for undergraduate research experiences overseen by STEM related faculty members at UH West O‘ahu. The research opportunity will provide students with a $2,000 stipend, materials, and travel to conferences to present their work. Interested students can apply here.
