A popular workshop series presented by the University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu Student Organic Garden returns in person with ‘Āina-to-‘Ōpū Workshop: ‘Apu-making, 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, at Hale Kūahuokalā in the garden on campus adjacent to the Classroom (D) and Laboratory (E) buildings.

UH West O‘ahu students, faculty, and staff are welcome to learn about coconut diversity and how to make cups using coconut shells. ‘Apu, or coconut shell cups, are most often used when serving and drinking ‘awa.

The workshop is being held in partnership with the Uluniu Project, a cultural landscaping and agroforestry initiative on the UH West O‘ahu campus. Prior to the ‘apu-making workshop, there is a scheduled Uluniu Project Workday to help care for the Coconut Grove, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the grove by the garden, or māla. Bring food for a potluck lunch and water, and wear gloves, hat, and covered shoes.

Those interested are welcome and encouraged to attend both events. For more information about the Uluniu Project Workday, email ahaaina@hawaii.edu, indrajit@hawaii.edu, or manulani@hawaii.edu. To RSVP or for more information about the ‘apu-making workshop, email tasiay@hawaii.edu.
