Student Accounting Night at the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu on Oct. 21 brought together 62 professionals and 126 students for an evening of networking and exploring options in the accounting industry.

“Student Accounting Night opens up opportunities to us students to get scholarships, internships and eventually to work in the accounting field,” said Gladys Cacay, 24, president of the Accounting Club at UH West Oʻahu.

There were accounting professionals from local companies in various industries, such as hospitality, CPA firms, governmental, insurance and private. Professionals were able to share stories about why they enjoy working in the accounting field, what courses would best prepare students for an accounting position, what positions are available and how to best meet the qualifications.

The event allowed students to rotate multiple times throughout the night, offering them a chance to meet a variety of professionals. Additionally, scholarships were given out to highlight some of the talented accounting students who will be graduating this fall.

The third annual Student Accounting Night was the most prominent event the Accounting Club organized this year, Cacay noted.

“Professionals from different CPA firms have started to notice and give attention to UH West Oʻahu accounting students,” Cacay said. “The interactions between all students and professionals were amazing. This was one of the best events so far, and I believe there is more to come for UH West Oʻahu accounting students.”
