The regular meeting of the UHWO Faculty Senate was held on Zoom, FS Chair Akamine presiding with Brenda Machosky Vice Chair/Recorder. Chair Akamine called the meeting to order at 11:32 am.

III. Administrative Reports
- Office of the Chancellor (Chancellor Maenette Benham)
- Legislative session concluded.
- Honorary Doctorate from UHWO will be awarded to Michael Nakasone at commencement.
- UBAC faculty representatives reviewed:
Kaʻiulani Akamine sits on UBAC as Nalimakui Council RepSen. Scheiding is the Faculty Senate Rep (appointed by FS Chair)Aldayne Adam is the Faculty UBAC Rep
- Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Vice-Chancellor Harald Barkhoff)
- Introduction of New Scheduler: Rebecca O’Reilly
- Associate VCAA on-campus interviews concluded.
- Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Administration (Vice-Chancellor David McDonald)
- New budget cycle beginning; seems to be flat. Higher enrollment will increase UHWO Budget. Uncertain how the Maui fire recovery needs will affect overall state budget.
- Legislative Results:
- Restoration of the $1.62M that was removed at the pandemic – restored again this year. This remains an annual process for now. For this year, removed threat of loss of money.
- FTE positions approved. Two positions in Early Childhood have been funded to meet needs of the State of Hawai`I (which was a request from UHWO). Hopefully more FTE to come.
- Unlikely that there will be a sweep of open positions.
- $5M approved by Legislature for a Photovoltaic project over the parking lot and behind the campus with a goal of becoming Net Zero within a few years. Also an opportunity for students to learn about this kind of project. Expect release of funds in about 6 months.
- Two EV chargers will be installed. Contractor is updating his credentials.
- Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs (Vice-Chancellor Dee Uwono)
- Graduation information announced by Leslie Opulauoho. 240 students are walking.
- Information soon about incoming students for Fall 2024.
IV. Faculty Senate Chairʻs Reports
- ASUHWO Update (Pres. Lindsey Millerd)
- Lindsey Millerd has completed term. Nine new members elected; more elections to fill openings in Fall.
- Students and ASUHWO reps were at all AVCAA Talk Story sessions.
- Working on better communication between ASUHWO and faculty and administration, proposing forums with students by administration.
- Presidential search format includes ASUHWO president.
- Chair Akamine recognized President Lindsey Millerdʻs term as ASUHWO president and participation in Faculty Senate.
- ACCFSC Updates (Chair Akamine)

- BOR Updates:
- FAFSA delays are a fiasco.
- Applications are significantly down – Nationally, 40% fewer people have applied.
- Need-based awards will be distributed late and this may adversely affect recruitment and enrollment
- UH working on getting merit scholarships to students.

- Campus Updates
- Mihi Mahalo to everyone who participates in shared governance and takes on leadership roles on campus and in our community.
- UBAC Update (Sen. Tom Scheiding / Aldayne Adlam)
- Top priority was expanding Hawai`i Promise to 4-year campuses, but that seems not to have happened this Legislative session.
- Faculty positions requested in Early Childhood Education and Pre-Nursing.
- PV System and other campus improvements related to the rail will be updated at next meeting.
- Faculty representatives on UBAC have requested update on enrollment plans on campus (which have not been provided). Also asking to know budget projections for the year and whether or not we are meeting projections and what has been flexible.
- Request for mental health counselors
- Request for renovations on campus.
- UHWO Public Forum for the UH Presidential Search May 7 on campus and zoom. One big discussion will be about separating UH President and UHM Chancellor positions (currently merged). UHWO faculty and staff might really want to broach this
