The regular meeting of the UHWO Faculty Senate was held on Zoom, FS Chair Orr presiding with Brenda Machosky Vice Chair/Recorder. Chair Orr called the meeting to order at 11:35 am.

II. Approval of Faculty Senate Minutes from May 3, 2024

III. Lecturer Constituency Confirmation

ACTION: The faculty senate unanimously confirms the nominations of
Sarah Glancy
Suzanne Finney
for one academic year terms as Senators representing the Lecturer Constituency.

IV. Faculty Senate Chairʻs Reports and Business

  1. ACCFSC Updates
    Two finalists for President position. there is an interview with FS Chairs. Stan will attend. If someone else wants to attend in place of Vice Chair (who is teaching at the time of the interviews)
  2. Changes in Compensation for Faculty Senate Chair
    There was a lengthy discussion of the Administrationʻs decision to change the compensation for the Faculty Senate Chair position, eliminating the 11-month compensation for an I-faculty taking on this role.

    1. Discussion of May 9, 2024 Memo regarding “Course releases/equivalencies for Academic Year 2024-2025.” that was created and sent to Chancellor by the previous Faculty Senate Chair but not reviewed or approved by the Faculty Senate. Per the Faculty Senate Charter: “All committee recommendations are subject to review and ratification by the Senate. Committees must submit written reports to the Senate of all recommendations and of all actions taken.”
      Therefore, the Faculty Senate undertakes a vote on whether to approve this memo.The faculty senate conclude the following:

      1. MOTION to postpone indefinitely approval of Memo of May 9, 2024 regarding “Course releases/equivalencies for Academic Year 2024-2025” that was created by the previous Faculty Senate Chair to the Chancellor.
        MOTION: Vice Chair Brenda Machosky
        No objections.
        Motion passes.Memo of May 9, 2024 regarding “Course releases/equivalencies for Academic Year 2024-2025” is postponed indefinitely.
        NOTE: This memo is not passed and remains indefinitely postponed until it is brought to the floor of Faculty Senate at a future time.
    2. The most recent official documentation of work load for the UH West O`ahu Faculty Senate Chair was the 2018-19 Work Agreement, posted until sometime in August 2024 and therefore the most current documentation of work load. As of todayʻs meeting, no Workload Agreement is posted for UH West O`ahu (which is noted as a violation of BOR policy ____IS THERE A NUMBER?
      1. MOTION: The faculty senate affirms support for the most recently posted Work Load Assignment Document of 2018-19 for the current Faculty Senate Chairʻs 2-year term.
        PROPOSED: Vice Chair Brenda Machosky
        No objections.
        Motion passes.

V. Administrative Reports

  1. Office of the Chancellor – Chancellor not present; see other reports
  2. Office of the Vice Chancellor Administration – Vice. Chancellor David McDonald
    1. Solar panels will be installed over main parking lot; expecting released funds in January; going through bureaucracy; will be starting work with UH Project Management. Things move slowly, so earliest will probably be late summer 2025 to start seeing something Anticipating completion by 2027.
    2. Housing study is finishing Starting discussions with developer about dorms.
    3. On behalf of the Chancellor
      1. Watch for details about UH President search
      2. BOR i will soon approve final budget for 2025-26; Business Office will work with Chancellor on a campus-wide presentation (live an zoom)
      3. United Way campaign is underway – please consider contributing.
      4. Question about reserved and unused parking. VCA McDonald will confer with security to not give warnings for the Fall Semester – parking in the green area.
    4. Office of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
      1. High School Counselor Workshop – Mahalo to faculty who participate.
      2. Scholarship mahalo lunch on September 27, 2024.
      3. West Oahu Career Exploration – two days this year because a higher number of interested students.
      4. Fall graduation will be run by VCAA for the fall; VCSA will be the lead for the spring.
      5. Enrollment is flat, but at least not decreased. Focusing on transfer students this year.

  8. Sustainability – (Sen. Rouel Velasco)
    1. Announce: Sustainability Pitch and Present Competition Elevate work of the garden and activities.
    2. Harvest day every Friday 10:00-12:00, and participants get access to fresh produce – open to faculty, students and staff.
    3. Committee will meet soon.

VIII. Announcements

Rouel Velasco: Pueo Awards – Divisions should start thinking about recognizing outgoing students. There is a celebration right before commencement.
