The regular meeting of the UHWO Faculty Senate was held via Zoom Platform. Chair G. Ka’iulani Akamine presiding with
Vice-Chair Lisa Spencer, Recorder. FS Chair Akamine called the meeting to order at 11:35 a.m.

II. Approval of Faculty Senate Minutes

  1. Concerns were raised regarding the possible violation of Robertʻs Rules during the April 12, 2023 Faculty Senate Meeting. A request was made to consult a professional parliamentarian.
    1. Dr. William Puette (CP, PRP) was contacted by Chair Akamine to review the concerns raised prior to the May 5, 2023 Faculty Senate meeting and was told that the meeting followed Robert’s Rules of Order and was vetted as correct.
    2. A motion was made to defer the approval of the minutes until the Sept. 2023 Faculty Senate meeting.
    3. A poll vote was made to determine if roll call vote or polling vote regarding the motion to defer the minutes. The motion was opposed.
      1. Quorum was established. No (no roll call vote) – 19; Yes (roll call vote) – 6.
    4. A poll vote was was used to address the motion to defer the April 12, 2023 Faculty Senate minutes to September 2023 Faculty Senate meeting. Corrections/Revisions to the April 12, 2023 Faculty Senate meeting minutes were recorded and the minutes were approved with corrections.
      1.  Quorum was established. Yes (defer minutes to September 2023) – 7; No (approve minutes at the May 2023 meeting) – 22.

III. Administrative Reports

  1. Office of the Chancellor (Maenette Benham)
    1. Reminder – Commencement (Graduates from 2020, 2021, and 2022, in addition to 2023).
    2. Mahalo – Enrollment team – Fall 2023 up 4.1% over, same time, Fall 2022.
    3. Mahalo – Participation in Open Discussion with President Lassner addressing Anonymous letters.
    4. Updates – VCAA and VCSA Searches
      1. VCAA candidates – Interviews continue – May 8 and 9
      2. VCSA candidate – Chancellor in negotiating phase – Should have a decision by next week.
    5. Faculty Review Process –
      1. 5/8/23 – Message from the VCAA regarding intent – Fall 2023.
    6. Legislature – Awaiting worksheets.
      1. System and campuses – Debrief presented soon.

V. Committee Report (or Announcements)

  1. Curriculum (Masahide Kato/Sen. Holly Itoga)
    1. One course was approved by the CC.
      1. Approvals and recommendations adopted.
  2. Sustainability (Christy Mello)
    1. New chair needed in Fall 2023.

VI. New Business

  1. Exec Course Release/Equivalencies Resolution.
    1. Suggestion to offer a course release to the Parliamentarian (Executive Committee could be responsible for determining this as already outlined in the resolution).
    2. No motion to amend the resolution to add course release to Parliamentarian.
    3. Motion to adopt resolution as is, Second.
    4. No opposition, the resolution is adopted as distributed.
  2. Fall on-campus/Hybrid Faculty Senate meeting request.
    1. Chair Akamine to poll all faculty in the Fall.
    2. 50% of faculty must agree to attend in person.
