Meet with Faculty Advisor

It is strongly recommended that students make an appointment to meet with their 
Faculty advisor in their first semester at UH West Oʻahu and continue to meet 
with them once every Academic Year.

Faculty Advisors provide information on:

  • Academic Program Goals
  • Course content, selection, and sequencing
  • Suggested courses for program electives
  • Program and course Pre-Requisites
  • Graduate Programs
  • Career and Professional development
  • Student Clubs
  • Service Learning Projects
  • Senior Project or Practicum

During advising sessions, students should attempt to address the following topics:

  • Division and Concentration course requirements
  • Writing-intensive requirement
  • Course sequencing and Program progression
  • Availability of courses
  • Time Management strategies
  • Any additional questions

For appointments:

Students are encouraged to contact their Faculty Advisor by email or telephone and set up an appointment during their regular Office Hours.

Key terms:

  • Faculty Advisors: the term that the Student Services office uses to refer to faculty members who are randomly signed to specific students.
  • Academic Advisors: is an advisor at the Student Services office who regularly meets with and advises students. They usually focus on university-wide policies and graduation requirements as well as questions related to general education requirements.
  • STAR: a web-based software system that allows students to view all campus-wide and program-specific requirements. Students can also use STAR to track their own academic progress and plan their path towards degree.
