UHWO CSD Emergency Management Internship

Are you a student currently enrolled in the Disaster Management or Justice Administration Program here at UHWO or other similar programs at one of the UH campuses? Are you looking to expand your knowledge and experience in either of these fields? Are you passionate about emergency management and/or the security field? If you answered yes to all these questions, then our department wants to offer you a unique “real-world” experience with our department.

This internship opportunity is meant for students seeking to complete their academic internship requirements. To qualify, students must be enrolled in a public safety or emergency management related degree program (i.e. disaster preparedness and emergency management, administration of justice, public administration, urban and regional planning).

Students who apply will be selected, mentored, and supervised by the Director of Campus Safety & Security. Students will be tasked with emergency management related projects in which they can apply their classroom knowledge. This program is meant to expand their skillsets, provide an insight into their chosen field of study, and help them prepare for a career in emergency management.

Potential Projects and Tasks

  • Building Emergency Plans
  • Incident Action Plans
  • After Action Reports
  • Research
  • Table Top Exercises
  • Security Assessments
  • Participation in, and planning for special events

Qualifications and Desired Characteristics

  • Enrolled in an Emergency Management or Public Safety related degree program within the University of Hawai‘i System
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently
  • Positive and professional attitude
  • Proficient with common software applications (Microsoft Office, Internet, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to resolve problems through creative and critical thinking skills

Internship Selection Process

  • Contact professor of your degree program
  • Submit the following information via email to the Internship Program Coordinator (see contact information below):
    • Brief explanation of your interest in this internship and why you would be a good candidate
    • Brief description of your degree program and work history (resumes and cover letters are acceptable but not required as long as the above criteria are addressed)
  • Brief interview with the UHWO CSD
  • Students selected for this internship will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement

Compensation: Unpaid

Approximate Time Commitment: Varies depending on degree requirements
