No Change in In-Person Class Sessions During the Mayor’s Latest Order

Date/Time sent: 09/24/2020 1:30 pm

Dear UH West O‘ahu Hybrid and Face-to-Face Instructors (Bccd):

This is a message intended for instructors who are currently teaching UH West O‘ahu courses in hybrid and face-to-face modalities.  It is intended to provide direction concerning in-person instruction for UH West O‘ahu hybrid and face-to-face classes, during the Mayor’s latest Order.

Recap

Chancellor Benham sent you an email message on August 26 regarding the UH decision to limit in-person instruction during the Mayor’s stay at home order that went into effect on August 27.

That two-week order was subsequently extended through September 24 by an amendment.

The Latest Order

The Mayor’s “Order Implementing Tier 1” went into effect today, September 24, and continues through October 31.  This latest Order builds on the “Second Stay at Home Order” and intends “to ensure that the maximum number of people self-isolate in their places of residence to the maximum extent feasible.”

Your Hybrid and Face-to-Face Class(es)

The University has not, yet, changed its position (as announced on August 24, UH News: President’s August 24, 2020 Message) on whether hybrid and face-to-face classes can resume with in-person instruction.  In light of the current Order building on the Second Stay at Home Order, UH remains committed to continuing the reduced presence on campuses in the interest of public health.

Should in-person instruction be absolutely essential, it must be conducted on campus, with permission from both the VCAA and Chancellor.  Requests for face-to-face sessions should be sent by tomorrow, Friday, September 25, directly to me at jmoniz@hawaii.edu.  Chancellor Benham and I will jointly review the requests for our approval.

Please include in your email request:

  • Course Name, Day(s) and Time of class
  • Number of students in class (# of students with accommodations/if you know)
  • Specific rationale for on-campus meetings

Should you have any questions, send your inquiries to me at the same email address, jmoniz@hawaii.edu.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A.S. Moniz, PhD
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
