Watch Us Grow
January 14, 20009
For more than 30 years, UH West O‘ahu has been located in portable buildings adjacent to Leeward Community College. This January, the University marks a new phase in its history by holding a ground blessing in anticipation of the construction of a state-of-the-art, baccalaureate campus in the City of Kapolei. This accomplishment honors the community leaders, public servants, administrators, faculty, staff and students who believe that a permanent, four-year campus on the west side of O‘ahu is not only valuable, but essential to Hawai‘i’s higher education landscape for the next 100 years and beyond.
The first phase of the campus will be built on 41 acres located on the makai side of Farrington Highway along the new North-South Road, and consists of a classroom building, administration building, library, campus center and maintenance building. It is expected to serve more than 1,500 students for spring 2012 classes.
The architectural design of the new campus will incorporate the latest trends in environmental sustainability and strives to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by following strict standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council. The construction of the entire campus and adjacent business and retail community will span several years. When completed, UH West O‘ahu will accommodate 7,600 students and 1,000 faculty and staff.
Aloha,
On behalf of the UH West O‘ahu ‘ohana, welcome to the University’s new campus website featuring the latest information on the construction of our permanent, four-year campus in west O‘ahu.
In addition to the development of state-of-the-art facilities, the UH West O‘ahu Kapolei campus will be a model of sustainability, incorporating the latest green building technologies and design for the benefit of future generations. In fall 2007, we enrolled our first-ever freshman class in the University’s more than 30-year history. We are now poised to begin construction of a much-anticipated permanent campus.
At UH West O‘ahu, we are dedicated to improving access to higher education for the Leeward and Central O‘ahu communities as well as all residents of the state of Hawai‘i and offering career-related academic programs valued in today’s marketplace.
I invite you to visit our website often for the latest information on University developments and to watch us grow as we move closer to realizing the dream of a permanent campus in the City of Kapolei.
Mahalo,
Gene I. Awakuni
UH West O‘ahu Chancellor
